Walker, Clifton A.
Jul 25, 1935 - Aug 15, 1954
Newspaper article, Pensacola newspaper, Mon., Aug. 16, 1954, Warrington Youth
Killed By Lightning. Bolt Strikes Tree; 2 Others Injured; Several Stunned.
A bolt of lightning which struck out of an almost clear sky killed a 19year
old Warrington youth, injured two other persons and stunned several others who
were visiting near Tarkiln Bayou, off Perdido Bay, Sunday afternoon.
Killed instantly as he leaned against a pine tree was Clifton A. Walker, of
502 S. Second St., Warrington. He was sitting on an old iron cot along with
several relatives and friends when the surprise bolt struck. Mrs. Harry T. Martin,
who was knocked unconscious by the blast, said he was sitting closest to the
tree at the time.
Treated at Baptist Hospital for burns were Thomas A Walker, 12, brother of the
dead youth, and Mrs. E. M. Kindel, 45, of 107 E. Central Ave., Warrington, his
aunt. Hospital officials said Sunday night Mrs. Kindel was still being treated
for small burns, but that the boy had been released.
Hamp Gandy, of the sheriff's officer, said Edward Kindel, husband of the injured
woman, told him they heard two or three claps of thunder but that they sounded
"way off." Mrs. Martin too said "it was a little hazy in the north but not there,"
and that the Walker youth was just about ready to leave when he was killed.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph A. Walker, of the Warrington address.
DURING VISIT
The Walker youth, together with Mr. and Mrs. Kindel, were visiting Mr. and Mrs.
Martin, who were building a boat landing on a lot they own along the water,
when the freak bold struck about 2:25 p.m. Mrs. Martin said all the persons
around three tree were stunned momentarily by the "loud clap of lightning and
thunder."
She said she could not recall seeing the bolt but that a little girl of the
group who was out in a boat told of seeing a "big gust of smoke and dust" just
after the lightning hit.
Walker, who was clad in a bathing suit at the time, was given artificial respiration
but without success. He and the injured persons were rushed to Baptist Hospital
by residents living nearby who ran to the scene after hearing the bolt and feeling
the vibration, Gandy said.
In addition to his parents, the youth is survived by one brother Thomas Allan
Walker; an uncle, E. L. Walker; one aunt, Mrs. E. M. Kindel, all of Pensacola,
and other relatives.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Fisher-Pou Funeral Home.

Rail Accident Fatal for Woman
Body Decapitated At East Heights
County lawmen Wednesday night investigated the macabre decapitation of a 46
year-old East Pensacola Heights woman who died instantly when her head was severed
from her body by a Pensacola bound L&N railroad train engine near Bayou Texar,
Sheriff R. L. Kendrick said.
Witnesses said the victim, Mrs. Cora Mae Wiseman, evidently was drinking when
she walked onto the railroad tracks about 20 feet from her one-room dwelling
which fronts on Pensacola bay near the L&N railroad trestle.
Thrown 100 Feet
Sheriff Kendrick, who personally investigated the accident, said he arrived
at the scene shortly after the woman was killed. He said her head was evidently
thrown a distance of nearly 100 feet from the spot where she was run over.
George Axelson, engineer on the Jacksonville-Pensacola train, said he did not
see Mrs. Wiseman, but thought the train had struck "a dog." Axelson slowed the
train down, and backed up. He said that several persons were gathered around
the spot before he realized that anyone had been killed.
George Kimmons, bachelor who occupied a small house near Mrs. Wiseman, said
that she had been drinking all day Wednesday, and that he saw her from his door
as she walked toward the train track. He said he shouted to her, but that it
was too late.
Kimmons said he was first to arrive at the spot where the body lay, clad only
in a scanty cotton dress. The head was on the opposite side of the track, facing
Bayou Texar.
C. E. Brigman, conductor on the train, said the accident must have occurred
near 9:20, as the train was due in th Pensacola station at 9:30.
Kimmons said that at the instant he shouted to her he heard the train give a
long whistle and two short blasts and knew that she had been hit. A half-filled
wine bottle lay about 10 feet from the badly mutilated body.
A coroner's jury, empanneled by County Judge Harvey Page, viewed the body before
it was removed from the spot where it lay. Judge Page said he was only acting
in the absence of Justice of the Peace L. B. Morgan.
Six men were empanneled for the jury, and viewed the wine bottle. They were
instructed to report to Judge Morgan's office next Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
Assisting Sheriff Kendrick in the investigation were Deputies William O. Amos,
Van Byrd and Highway Patrolman M. E. Tanton, who was one of the first to arrive
at the scene of the accident.
